As mandated by the PRAAD Act 535 of 1997, the Department is responsible for managing records in all public institutions from creation to disposition and any other duties that would enhance the preservation of public records.

Mr Gregory Septimus Setse
Ag. Head of PRAAD
The current Acting Director of the Public Records and Archives Administration Department (PRAAD) in Ghana is Mr. Gregory Septimus Setse. He was appointed to the position in March, 2023. Mr. Setse is a graduate of the University of Ghana, Legon in 2001 where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and the study of Religions. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Archival Studies from the same University in 2003. He had the opportunity to pursue a Post-Graduate Diploma progamme in Public Administration in 2022, and a Senior Management Development Training Programme organised by the Office of the Head of Civil Service at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Green Hill Accra in 2023.
Mr. Setse has twenty years of experience in records management and archiving. He has worked in various capacities at PRAAD, including as the Regional Head in the Central Region of Ghana from May, 2015 to September, 2019 and as the Regional Head in the Ashanti Region from September, 2019 to March, 2023.
He was awarded the Ghana Civil Service Excellence Award 2018 for outstanding performance as a Principal Records Officer in the Records Class.
Mr. Setse is a member of the Archivists and Records Managers Association of Ghana (ARMAG) associations, the Chartered Institute of Administrators and Management Consultants-Ghana and the Ghana Association for Public Administration and Management (GAPAM).
He is enthusiastic about using digital tools to harness records and archival management. Mr. Setse is a passionate advocate for the preservation of Ghana’s historical records. He also believes that these records are essential for understanding Ghana’s past and for building a better future for posterity.
FUNCTIONS
In consonance to this the Department’s function is to –
Ensure that public offices, Institutions and individuals who create and maintain records follow good record practices.
Establish and implement procedures for the timely disposal of public records of no continuing value.
Advise on best practices and establish national standards in records keeping as well as building capacity in records and archival management in the public and private sectors.
Establish and implement procedures for the transfer of public records of permanent value for preservation in the national archives or other archival repositories as may be designated under the Act.
Perform any function conferred on the national archives under any other existing enactment.
